A Review of tUnE-yArDs Singles ‘Water Fountain’ and ‘Wait for a Minute’

Those who have not had the fortune to listen to tUnE-yArDs should jump on the bandwagon ASAP. Comprised of lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, Merrill Garbus, and bassist, Nate Brenner, tUnE-yArDs often starts with Garbus creating different loops made up of percussion, ukulele, and vocals before she sets her vocals free and wails over the top of her loops.

This month, tUnE-yArDs has released two singles from their album, Nikki Nack, which will be released on the label, 4AD, on May 6th, 2014. These two singles are the delightful, yet intense, ‘Water Fountain’, and the smooth and soulful, ‘Wait for a Minute’. In ‘Water Fountain’, lead singer, Merrill Garbus, presents a very present, in-your-face vocal that is hard to ignore. While some may be taken aback by her go-big-or-go-home style of singing, she commits to any note she sings in “Water Fountain” with jazz style as the song builds. In addition, bassist, Nate Brenner offers tantalizingly smooth and interesting bass lines that only add to Garbus’ loops and vocals.

In contrast to ‘Water Fountain’, the single, ‘Wait for a Minute’, is laid-back  with Garbus’ jazzy vocal that is infused with a touch of R&B. Listening to ‘Wait for a Minute’ without going mmmmmm and feeling a deep satisfaction from Garbus’ smooth vocals, and Brenner’s even smoother bass lines within “Wait for a Minute” is hard—and arguably impossible to do.

And for those who need an even greater tUnE-yArDs fix, Merrill, Nate, and a band of saxophones can be heard on May 26th at the Knitting Factory in Boise—the show starts at 7pm and tickets start at $14.50.

Here’s a link to buy tickets for the show, hope to see you all there!
